Grand River, Northeast Use Stimulus Funds to Expand Broadband
Two MTIA member companies serving rural counties in northern Missouri have been awarded major grants in the second funding round of the federal broadband stimulus program. Grand River Mutual Telephone Company and Northeast Missouri Rural Telephone Company will use the federal funds to expand broadband service through fiber-to-the-home projects in their service areas.
Federal officials from the USDA Rural Development agency were on hand July 9 in Princeton to announce a $40.9 million award to Grand River for projects in the carrier’s Missouri and Iowa service areas. Grand River’s Missouri project will bring expanded broadband service to more than 1,200 homes and 40 businesses in their Lathrop exchange.
Later that day the USDA team traveled to Green City to recognize Northeast Missouri Rural Telephone Company for their successful effort to net more than $7 million in loans and grants that will be used to bring a 20 Mbps broadband service to the area. This funding is in addition to a $10 million award to Northeast from the first round of stimulus grants.
